More and more companies are producing cordless power tools due to the new technology available. Some of the leading cordless power tool brands are Makita, DeWalt, Hitachi and Bosch. Much of the developments surrounding cordless power drill drivers are to do with the battery packs that cordless power tools need to function. As battery pack, technology has improved over the last few years many manufacturers now offer a wide range of battery packs including Li-Ion, Ni-MH and Ni-Cad packs.

SDS Drills come in two standard sizes and they are SDS Plus (10mm) and SDS-Max (18mm). These sizes relate the size of the shank. SDS Plus is the many common and can withstand a hammer of up to 4Kg, and SDS Max for hammers over 5Kg. SDS Plus grips the drill bit in two places whereas SDS Max grip in three places. With the SDS drill you can use a chuck adaptor that when used enables the use of standard drill bits for rotary drilling. It is wise to avoid SDS Drills that do not have a safety clutch. If the drill bit jams and is unable to turn a safety clutch might prevent the drill body from spinning. This spinning can cause severe damage to the wrist and arm with the possibility of the drill being yanked from your hand, jumping out of the hole and coming into contact with a part of the body. A safety clutch may be high on your list of required features.

Before cordless drill drivers arrived, many drills had pistol grips, where the handle is behind the motor like the handle of a gun. But many of today's cordless models are equipped with a T-handle: The handle base flares to prevent hand slippage and accommodate a battery. Because the battery is centered under the weight and bulk of the motor, a T-handle provides better overall balance, particularly in heavier drills. Also, T-handle drills can often get into tighter spaces because your hand is out of the way in the centre of the drill. But for heavy-duty drilling and driving large screws, a pistol grip does let you apply pressure higher up — almost directly behind the bit — allowing you to put more pressure on the work.

The chuck is the attachment where the bit is inserted, having jaws that grip the bit. Drills come in 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" sizes. This measurement is the chuck size and indicates the shaft diameter of the drill bits and accessories that might fit the drill. Chucks can be keyed (the jaws are tightened or loosened with a key) or keyless (the chuck can be tightened or loosened by hand). Keyless chucks offer two major benefits. If you have ever misplaced or lost a chuck key, you already know one of them. A keyless chuck might also allow drill bits to be changed more quickly. A real plus when you need to change from a drill bit to a screwdriver bit repeatedly or should you happen to be wearing gloves on the job. You can change the chuck in some keyless models with only one hand because the shaft locks when the trigger is off. In many models, however, you have to use both hands to turn the chuck in opposite directions. Nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries represent the latest breakthrough in batteries. They're smaller and run longer than standard nickel-cadmium (Nicad) batteries. NiMH batteries also pose less of a hazard when it comes to disposal than Nicads because they don't contain any cadmium, which is highly toxic. Makita, Bosch, Hitachi and DeWalt offer NiMH batteries, and other manufacturers might soon produce these power cells too.

If a Li-ion battery is stored with too low a charge, there is a risk of allowing the charge to drop below the battery's low-voltage threshold, resulting in an unrecoverable dead battery. Once the charge has dropped to this level, recharging it can be dangerous. Some batteries therefore feature an internal safety circuit which might prevent charging in this state, and the battery might be for all practical purposes dead. In circumstances where a second Li-ion battery is available for a given device, it is recommended that the unused battery be discharged to 40% and placed in the refrigerator to prolong its shelf life. While the battery can be used or charged immediately, some Li-ion batteries might provide more energy when brought to room temperature.

An electric or portable (battery powered) drill can be a scary thing. But they aren’t hard to use. The most common drill drivers come in a pistol shape, making them easy to hold and use. The drill has a trigger you squeeze in order to make the drill bit rotate. Sometimes there is also a safety button located on the pistol handle that has to be pressed at the same time you squeeze the trigger in order to make the drill bit rotate. The battery pack is usually inserted into a docking station on the bottom of the pistol handle. Between uses the battery pack is charged in another docking station which is connected to an electrical outlet.

Not all holes need to go all the way through the material. Some holes need only be a certain depth in the wood. The easiest way to make certain you drill the correct depth is to measure the necessary hole depth on your drill bit. Then mark that point on the bit with a marker or wrap some tape around the bit at the measured spot. Then when you drill only insert the drill bit to the mark or tape. You can also purchase bit collars that slide over the bit and are secured at the suitable depth. The collars usually attach with a small hex wrench or screwdriver. The drilling is undertaken and you have to get the bit out. Give the drill a little power to spin the bit and slowly pull it out of the hole. Don’t be too fast or pull it out without spinning the bit. Either of these may cause the bit to bind in the hole. The hole is complete and now you need to attach the fastener. Bits can be inserted into the drill turning the drill into a screwdriver or wrench. If you are attaching screws determine the size of the screw head and select a matching screwdriver bit. Connect the screwdriver bit to the drill in the same way you would other drill bits. Put the bit head in the screw head and squeeze the trigger. Be careful not to provide so much power that you go all the way through the material (should that’s not called for) or pressure the screw head too far down into the material. It’s easy to get carried away with the power of the drill. If you are attaching a bolt fastener you can also purchase bolt sockets that can be attached to the drill. Match the bit size with the bolt, attach the bit to the drill, and screw in the bolt.

Learning how to sharpen drill bits is cost effective, it better to keep a bit sharp by occasional sharpening rather than waiting until it becomes really blunt. A sharp bit cuts better with less effort whether used in a power or hand drill. A sharp bit might also give a cleaner hole.

DIY Safety tips:

Use a voltage tester to check the power to the wires or connections are off before touching them. Check your work thoroughly before restoring power to the circuit. If you are not certain, seek professional advice. Remember the golden rule ... " If you don’t know – ask".
Store tools in a safe place, out of the way of children and pets. Keep them in a box or a rack. When using knives, always cut away from you. Use a baton as a guide and run a sharp knife along the edge of it. Always store knives securely.

Don't wait until disaster strikes to find your stop-cocks and gate valves. Opening and closing them four times a year might ensure they easily work when you need them to. Don't let a blown fuse leave you in the dark: keep a repair kit nearby your mains fuse box, with a torch - check the batteries regularly - screwdrivers, spare fuses, bulbs and fuse wire, rubber gloves and insulated pliers, a trimming knife and insulating tape.

Do not work with electricity in damp or wet conditions. If you MUST, always use an RCD. Always place the cable of a hedge trimmer or mower over your shoulder and keep it behind you at all times.
