More and more companies are producing cordless power tools due to the new technology available. Some of the leading cordless power tool brands are Makita, DeWalt, Hitachi and Bosch. Much of the developments surrounding cordless power drill drivers are to do with the battery packs that cordless power tools need to function. There are many types of drill on the market today, rotary drills, drill drivers, hammer drills, SDS drills designed for drilling brick, concrete, masonry, metal and wood. Drills come in three distinct handle styles. The many popular cordless models have the T-handle style where the handle is placed near the middle. The T-handle style distributes the weight for better balance and less wrist strain. Some people still prefer the more traditional pistol-grip style. The third style is the right-angle version, designed for use where space is restricted.

Cordless drill drivers are measured in volts. Drills are available in everything from around 2 volts (for a cordless screwdriver) to the newest 24-volt tools. Lithium-ion batteries (sometimes abbreviated Li-ion batteries) are a type of rechargeable battery in which a lithium ion moves between the anode and cathode. The lithium ion moves from the anode to the cathode during discharge and from the cathode to the anode when charging.

If a Li-ion battery is stored with too low a charge, there is a risk of allowing the charge to drop below the battery's low-voltage threshold, resulting in an unrecoverable dead battery. Once the charge has dropped to this level, recharging it may be hazardous. Some batteries therefore feature an internal safety circuit which will stop charging in this state, and the battery will be for all practical purposes dead. In circumstances where a second Li-ion battery is available for a given device, it is recommended that the unused battery be discharged to 40% and placed in the refrigerator to prolong its shelf life. While the battery may be used or charged immediately, some Li-ion batteries will provide more energy when brought to room temperature.

An electric or portable (battery powered) drill can be a scary thing. But they aren’t hard to use. The most common drill drivers come in a pistol shape, making them easy to hold and use. The drill has a trigger you squeeze in order to make the drill bit turn. Sometimes there is also a safety button located on the pistol handle that has to be pressed at the same time you squeeze the trigger in order to make the drill bit turn. The battery pack is usually inserted into a docking station on the bottom of the pistol handle. Between uses the battery pack is charged in another docking station which is connected to an electrical outlet.

To drill a satisfactory hole in any material, the correct type of drill bit must be used; it must be used correctly and be sharpened as suitable. Many jobs around the house require a hole of some kind to be drilled - whether it is putting up a shelf, building a cabinet or hanging a light fitting. For basic requirements, a set of high-speed steel twist drill bits and some masonry drill bits will probably be sufficient for the average handyman. Do not work with electricity in damp or wet conditions. If you MUST, always use an RCD. Always place the cable of a hedge trimmer or mower over your shoulder and keep it behind you at all times.
When painting, or using any material that generates toxic fumes or dust, keep the room well ventilated. Never smoke while painting or standing close to a freshly painted area.

Ladders are one of the main causes of DIY accidents. Erect the ladder according to the manufacturer's instructions. Never lean to one side as you could lose balance.
